Veteran’s Day 2005

Posted November 11, 2005 at 1:00 am by basil

Veteran's DayToday is Veteran’s Day. For the freedoms you have, for the extraordinary life you lead, thank a veteran.

It was a veteran, not a reporter,
Who guaranteed freedom of the press.

It was a veteran, not a poet,
Who guaranteed freedom of speech.

It was a veteran, not a campus organizer,
Who guaranteed freedom to demonstrate.

It was a veteran, not a minister,
Who guaranteed freedom to worship.

It was a veteran, not a salesman,
Who guaranteed freedom to own property.

It was a veteran, not a travel agent,
Who guaranteed freedom to travel.

It was a veteran, not a politician,
Who guaranteed freedom to vote.

It is a veteran who salutes the Flag,
Risks it all for the Flag,
And who is buried beneath the Flag.
— J. L. Sager *

If you need help with TrackBacks, Harvey of Bad Example has an excellent primer here. Or check out my post about TrackBacks here.

I want to hear Zell read these words again! Thanks for putting them here for this day.

You have encouraged me to attempt a “TrackBack” – I have never yet been successful at this endeavor! ;-) AND – apparently I STILL haven’t completed this type of “travel” this evening/morning? I actually attempted the use of the amazing WIZBANG pinger! First there was an error page – attempted again – it tells me there was a ping already?!

    Didn’t make it? Maybe HERE

    What’s the story behind Sager?
(PS: I oppose the bill I mention — and it is an open post)

    Oh sure. Blame Basil :)
    He encouraged me, too

    This post explains what’s happening:

But, every so often, it catches one it shouldn't. But, it's going to a moderation queue, and I can review it later and either approve it or delete it. So, if you leave a comment that doesn't show up for a while, now you know why.

    . . .

Well, remember I said we're running Spam Karma 2 here? It not only checks comments, it also checks TrackBacks. And, if it can't find a link in the TrackBack post, it catches it!

So, if you've left a TrackBack and it didn't show up, check to see if you forgot (or just failed) to link to the Open TrackBack post.

Now, sometimes Spam Karma catches stuff that shouldn't be caught. It's not perfect. Nothing is. But it will hold the TrackBack in queue for me to approve or delete. And I'll do one or the other. Sometimes, if I have time, I'll drop an e-mail explaining what happened. But not usually.

It reported your post did not have a link. If it initially didn’t have the link (or if there was an error in the link) when the TrackBack was initially sent, it would have been caught.

Not saying that was the case, just saying it reported no link when it checked your post.

Anyway, for whatever reason, it queued your TrackBack. That was why the “we already got one” notice.

When you say error page, if you’d let me know what the error said, that’d be helpful running it down.

    Poca Dot:

I must confess ignorance on Sager. I have seen the piece circulated with two different people being credited (the other being a Marine chaplain). I researched it before, but can’t find my information, but I seem to recall that Sager was the actual author.

  41. Darleen Says:

Veteran’s day started as Armistice Day – the end of WWI, which is becoming the Forgotten War (along with Korea). Last year I posted this WWI poem:

If I should die, think only this of me:
That there’s some corner of foreign field
That is forever England. There shall be
    In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam,
A body of England’s, breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.

And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the Eternal mind, no less
Gives somehwere back the thoughts by England given,
    Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.
