Catfish Close Out Home Stand With Loss, Still In Second Place

After nearly winning the game in the ninth, in the 13th inning, the Columbus Catfish dropped a 4-2 decision to the Greenville Drive (Red Sox) in the final game of the opening home stand of the season.

The loss left the Catfish a series split, and winning five of eight on the home stand. Coupled with the Asheville Tourists (Rockies) loss, and wins by the Rome Braves and Augusta Greenjackets (Giants), the Catfish are tied for second place with Asheville and Augusta, now three games behind Rome.

Tonight, the Catfish fell behind early, down 2-0 after two innings, but battled back with Lucas May hitting a solo home run in the fifth, and scoring the tying run with two out in the ninth. The Catfish were denied the win when Juan Rivera, who had knocked in the tying run, was thrown out at home trying to score on Sergio Pedroza's double.

Neither team threatened for the next three innings, but Greenville led off the 13th with a homer, then scored again with three straight hits after two were out. The Catfish failed to score in the 13th, and the Drive earned the split.

One note of interest was that Catfish third baseman Russ Mitchell, had an eight-game hitting streak snapped.

After a day off Wednesday, the Catfish head to Asheville for a four-game series before heading to division-leading Rome for another four games.

  1. OH - That's where everyone was! Everyone went missing in Baltimore. Guess their horoscopes told them they'd be stomped 15-1! ;-D
