Catfish Beat Division-Leading Augusta, Lose Pedroza

Since the Wife and I are still on the road, we didn't get to make tonight's Columbus Catfish game. However, we have this report from the Columbus Catfish:

Columbus Outlasts Augusta, 4-3 in Extras
Throwing error in tenth scores game-winner

Columbus, GA ... The Columbus Catfish (13-11) took advantage of three Augusta GreenJackets (18-6) errors to win 4-3 in ten innings Sunday at Golden Park. The final misplay occurred in the bottom of the tenth when a throwing error allowed 3B Russ Mitchell to score from third base.

Augusta took a 2-0 before Columbus got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. CF Bridger Hunt singled to left field, scoring RF Lucas May.

The Catfish took a 3-2 lead with two runs in the fifth inning. 2B Travis Denker drove in 1B Jason Mooneyham with a single. DH David Sutherland later hit a sacrifice fly that plated C Tony Harper.

The GreenJackets tied the game at 3-3 with a run in the top of the eighth inning. Knotted after regulation, the Catfish needed just one extra frame to win the game. The bottom of the 10th began with a lead-off double by Mitchell, followed by a walk to Harper. Denker then grounded into a fielder's choice that moved both runners into scoring position. With the infield and outfield drawn in, Sutherland hit a ground ball to 1B Pablo Sandoval. As Mitchell broke from third in a threat to score, Sandoval threw the ball away at home plate and Mitchell tallied the winning run.

LHP Marlon Arias gave up just two runs on five hits and one walk in the first seven innings. RHP Ramon Troncoso (2-0) did not allow a run in the last 2 1/3 innings for his longest outing of the season and his second win in as many appearances. LHP David Quinowski (2-2) recorded just two outs, but allowed the unearned run and was tagged with the loss.

1B Jason Mooneyham went 2-for-5 with one run. He has reached base in 35 straight games and each of 28 home games with the Catfish this season.

The third game of the series will begin Monday at 7:00pm. RHP Cory Wade (6-4, 4.35) will oppose RHP Joe Martinez (8-5, 3.81). For tickets or more information call (706) 571-8866 or visit www.ColumbusCatfish.com.

I'm looking forward to getting back home and seeing another Catfish game. However, one of our favorite players won't be there. Sergio Pedroza was promoted to Vero Beach.

South Atlantic League home run and RBI leader RF Sergio Pedroza has been promoted from the Columbus Catfish (Low-A) to the Vero Beach Dodgers (Advanced-A).

This season Pedroza hammered 21 home runs and drove in 75 runs as one of the most dangerous sluggers in the league. In his professional career with the Los Angeles Dodgers he has averaged just 14.6 at-bats per home run. Pedroza batted .281 in 89 games with the Catfish and posted an on-base percentage of .437 and a slugging percentage of .562. The 22-year-old native of California attended Cal State Fullerton before being drafted by the Dodgers in third round of the 2005 draft.

More at the Columbus Catfish site.

We're sure going to miss watching Sergio play, but this promotion is well-deserved. We wish him all the best.
