There were those who cheered Martin Luther King’s assassination at Catholic Seminary back in the day, ignorant that fellow seminarian Clarence Thomas was ascending the stairwell behind them (the judiciary owes those punks a debt of gratitude, proving that God works in mysterious ways), but throughout my formative years I recall few of us even cheering on Andrei Gromyko’s of Yuri Andropov’s demise (I did, but most righties not from Eastern Europe thought us uncouth and horribly vengeful) even though I recall a case about a police dispatcher lamenting that Hinckley hadn’t shot straight, on duty, over the dispatch system. More recently I recall people trying to argue that Iraq the Model’s Fahdil brothers were CIA plants or those who call the government in Baghdad “the puppet regime”. That happened around the time The Paranoid Style of Politics shifted mostly from the Right to the Left. I wonder why the change occurred? I wonder even more how their hatred for their domestic opponents eclipsed their professed ideologies and allowed them to make common cause with these people (kind of like the anti-anti-Communists). I’ll be unimaginative and blame the sixties counter-culture rot, and I suppose Peirre DuPont would agree.
