S-s-s-s-s-mokin'!

Have you seen the new ad from the Herman Cain campaign?

[Direct link]

CBS calls it "bizarre" and notes that the ad is, currently, unlisted. Which means you can't go to the Cain YouTube channel and find it unless you know where to look.

ABC takes the opportunity to run down a list of Cain campaign staff with "interesting" backgrounds.

The Atlantic asks, "For real?"

Rather than go on, let me sum up the reaction: the ad generated a lot of criticism from people who already didn't like Herman Cain.

I'm not a smoker, so it didn't particularly appeal to me. But smokers don't like being criticized, just like everybody else.

Obama smokes, but hides it. Cain's campaign manager smokes, and posts it on YouTube.

I'm wondering how this is going to play out.

  1. Basil, I've got zero problem with it.

How many "tough guy" images have we seen over the past decade of war of Marines, Soldiers, etc. puffing a cig while honed in on a problem?

I like it. Really, I do.

  2. It just works on so many levels.

It's a thumb in the eye to the nagging nanny-state.

And it's a thumb in the eye to the Obama admin that treats the preferred self-medication of 50 million Americans like a leper's sloughing arm-flesh.

  3. Holey moley, Harvey, that is a powerful analogy. I should've shut my eyes while reading that. :)

As for the ad, Cain probably did lose the freaked-out-by-creepiness vote, but I don't think he ever had that demographic.

Unlike Andy, I don't see the comparison to soldiers smoking, but it does seem like Cain might pick up some smoker votes. Everyone else writes them off, but guess what? They can still vote! I think the nannies among us are going to have to do something about that next.

All in all, I'd guess Cain gained a bit by the discussion of him more than the content. Creepy style over substance, or something.
