Twilight Zone Trivia

One of these is not like the others. Only a true Twilight Zone fan will know which. I knew right from the start. But, do you?

[The YouTube]

By the way, if you have to guess, you'll probably not get it right. But, if you know, you know. I'll give you until tonight.

Okay, if you want a hint (another one; yes, you already have one), it happened on the show three times, but only once in this video. That ought to be a useless enough hint.

UPDATE: The answer is in the comments.

  1. Easy Peasy, but I won't ruin it. I lived for TTZ when I was a kid.

  2. I've seen every episode between 1 and 20 times. No idea.

  3. Should I be scared or proud that I recognize most of the episodes just from the little bit of scenery behind him?

And I have to admit, I went through the video a couple of times because it is fun watching his hair go up and down through all the cuts.

  4. Don't know if its "it" or not, but it appears that Rod Serling is front and center on every one of these, except one (#13), where the cameraman is rushing to get him in the frame.

[Not what I had in mind, but will check that out. - B]

  5. Was it #27 when he accidentally intro'd The Outer Limits?

  6. OK, I got it - it took me watching it a second time.
I was totally baffled at first. I love that show.

  7. I almost caught it the first time through, but it's absolutely obvious.

  8. OK, now that I quit watching his hair go up and down and actually paid attention... was it that one there that didn't match all the others?

I want to know if I saw what your showing but I don't want to look stupid (any more than than I already am) if I get it wrong. And if I am right I don't want to spoil the game for the others.

And three times total? If it is the one I am thinking did they not do it more because it wasn't really needed? Or did they do it those times just because they could?

  14. A lot of people mentioned Rod Serling's clothing, particularly the tie, or lack of. But that's not it. Although, I will have to rewatch them all to see just how many times that happened

There were also suggestions about Serling's position within the frame, either off center-frame, appearing to be floating, and such. Not what I'm looking for.

And, there was the omission of "The" when he says "The Twilight Zone." But, that's more of an editing thing by the creator of the video.

    So, what is it?

In the first clip (first hint, "right from the start") he's appearing at the end of the episode. Although you heard Rod Serling voice at the end of all the episodes, he only appeared on-screen at the end of three (second hint). And in the other two, he disappeared (fade to stars) before he uttered the words "The Twilight Zone."

The first clip in the video is from "A World Of His Own," the last show of the first season. Serling appears on-set, and starts the closing narration, including saying "The Twilight Zone." The character Gregory West (Keenan Wynn) then briefly interacts, scolding him, and destroying his tape (a plot point from the show). Serling fades away. The characters then have a drink, and we hear (but don't see) Serling's final bit of narration, as is the norm for the show.

The other two ending appearances by Serling (that aren't in the video) are the second season's final episode, "The Obsolete Man." After the Chancellor (Fritz Weaver) is taken off as obsolete (oops, SPOILERS), Serling appears off-set and begins the narration. It fades to stars after he makes his point, but before he says the words "The Twilight Zone." And, the only other time Serling appeared at the end of the episode was the third-season's "The Fugitive." (This was two-thirds through the season, so the pattern of appearing at the end of the show at the end of the season is broken.) Serling appears in-set, wraps the story up, but the scene fades to stars just before he utters "The Twilight Zone." Of course, those were omitted from the video because he didn't say "The Twilight Zone" on-camera.

    Thanks to everyone for playing.

  15. I didn't guess it. I thought I was on to something when it appeared that some episodes looked like they were filmed, and others were obviously on videotape; but the percentages didn't work for the contest. Cigarettes, and grins, also came and went.

  16. Basil.....would you accept Obscure Reference of the Week Award?

  17. What I did notice about this is if you watch the video a few times straight, you could swear every once in a while he says "The Toilet Zone"

Now, if you would excuse me, I think I need to use the bathroom.

  18. I would've picked the one at the 1:40 mark. His inflection goes up instead of down like all the others. He's stating the show title's within a sentence, not at the end. This happened at the introduction for the episode "Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge." Why this episode is particularly different is another story...
