Voting for Obama proved that

Some Website called VoucherCloud did a study recently, and it showed Americans don't know stuff.

Now, I didn't need some coupon-aggregator Website to do a study to tell me that. I've met a lot of Americans. Related to several. Am one. I know Americans, and I know a lot of them are stupid. There's no other reason than stupid that explains how Obama got elected. And that the stupid is a long-term condition is proven by Obama getting elected twice.

Okay, back to the study. It seems that 11% of Americans think HTML is a sexually transmitted disease. And, the study showed some other things, too:
  • 27% identified "gigabyte" as an insect commonly found in South America. A gigabyte is a measurement unit for the storage capacity of an electronic device.
  • 42% said they believed a "motherboard" was "the deck of a cruise ship." A motherboard is usually a circuit board that holds many of the key components of a computer.
  • 23% thought an "MP3" was a "Star Wars" robot. It is actually an audio file.
  • 18% identified "Blu-ray" as a marine animal. It is a disc format typically used to store high-definition videos.
  • 15% said they believed "software" is comfortable clothing. Software is a general term for computer programs.
Yes, I sit here and laugh. But, is it really a laughing matter? Shouldn't we try to help these poor people?

No. We need to laugh at them. Just like when you see a car with an Obama sticker, you point and laugh.

  1. In "The Rational Optimist", Matt Ridley seems to think that progress is evolutionary with "ideas having sex" to produce new ideas. Apparently his HTML IS sexually transmitted. Of course, if sex were to cease, barring "tech singularity" style immortality so would HTML, so from that standpoint, HTML is still a sexually transmitted disease.

  2. Yeah, and 53% of Americans think the business-end of a donkey is an ice cream dispenser.

  3. Shouldn’t we try to help these poor people?

No, and we shouldn't allow them to vote or reproduce either. Sadly, they're the ones who do both the most.

  4. Isn't a "Blu-Ray" a sting-ray that lives in extremely cold water?

  5. Hmm... I don't understand your anti-Obama-ism? Me being European I obviously don't know a lot of what he does over there, I certainly don't think he does a brilliant job and that he got a Nobel price (for being the first black president of the USA or what???) is surely nothing I can understand. But in my opinion he is the least evil out of all the political leaders you produce over there! What would be your alternative? Another Bush?

  6. @5 - Thanks for coming by, Mimi.

I guess the short answer is that a lot of IMAO readers have a very strong independent streak to them. It's unsurprising, really, since the philosophical core of the American system of government is that our elected officials are our servants. With this in mind, we become morally offended when they act like our masters.

America is a country of free men. We seek to trade with equals. Ruling and serving are ideas our forebears left behind when they left Europe.

A lot of us feel like President Obama is trying to accrue power over America's citizens in violation of the spirit, if not the letter, of the limitations placed on his office by the Constitution. We are angry, and we show this anger by disrespecting and ridiculing him. Because we don't owe him any more respect than what he's earned, and we don't think - in our best judgment - that he's earning any with his actions.

I hope that helps explain our attitude a little.

  7. Harvey,
Nice try, but do you really think she's even gonna understand that?
    Not likely.

  8. Any European (or anyone in any place outside the US) that wants Obama can have him.

  9. @7 - You may be right, but she seemed polite, so I figured she deserved an honest answer.

What she does with it is up to her.

  10. We don't need to spay or neuter the stupid ones, nothing so extreme is really necessary. All we really need to do is remove all the warning labels and the situation will take care of itself in a generation or less.

  11. I'm surprised at the results of this survey, because it seems to me that kids & teens use those computer terms fluently -- so, did they sample only geezers? I can't imagine any student not knowing these terms.

    Re: the Godzilla face-plant:
On TV last night one channel was offerrng a movie called "Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla." How have I never heard of this?
But, who is stupider -- the Japanese for making this movie, or Americans for buying and viewing it?

  12. HTML is a sexual disease, you get it from Porn sites, don't you?

Just say no to Jeb Bush.

  13. Thanks Harvey for your explanation. Well I get it, you don't agree with what he does or with how he leads your country. But I think someone who takes such a strong political point, and saying what he doesn't want should also offer solutions or alternatives. Do you think you need a leader who takes more care of the national inner problems instead of trying to "rule" the rest of the world and stick his nose into conflicts that shouldn't be any of the USA's concern? Because that's the impression that I get of the USA. I think that you guys have so many problems regarding health care, insurance, housing, education and unemployment and instead of concentrating on solving those your politicians only ever try to mess about in the rest of the world.

In my opinion a healthy and happy inside helps with a strong and powerful appearance on the outside and that applies as much to your own person and body as it does to a nation.

Sorry for drifting slightly off topic, just interested in people's opinions and what's behind it.

And about the above article - I think it's hilarious and completely corresponds with my (pre?)judice of the average American :D A friend of mine's mother got asked in the late eighties in the USA whether they had fridges in Germany. And I could tell loads more of these stories... I find it amusing but in the same time shocking, when thinking that THIS nation's got soo much power over all of us...

(And sorry, I don't wanna sound anti-USA or something, I know that there's loads of great and intelligent guys about ;) )

  14. @13 - Actually what we really want the government to do is... nothing at all. We'd prefer to be left alone to solve our own problems through voluntary private organizations, whether for-profit or through charity, because these organizations have more incentive to do things that actually help people.

Government is very good at killing people and breaking things. Helping people & creating things?... you need either a profit motive or a religiously-rooted spirit of charity to make that happen. Every institutional organization has its own strengths, and should stick with what it does best. I don't want my church fighting wars, and I don't want government helping the poor. They both stink at those things.

Oh, and just so you know, the humor we aim for on this blog is to over-act like the stereotype of reckless, insensitive cowboy Americans that conservatives in this country get accused of being by the left. Our sense of fun involves taking that stereotype and running with it as fast as we can.

So... let's invade Canada, steal its oil, and convert its moose population to Christianity! Yee-haw!!!

  16. Don't worry Mimi these days we Americans are leaving the world domination business to one Vladimir Putin.

  17. Say, Mimi, you need to tell us what country in Europe you're from so we can tease you mercilessly about it.

  18. @5. Think of it like trying to run to a destination, and every time you feel like you're getting closer, someone dumps a brick in your backpack. Sure, we can still run - but it's been made all the more difficult and we find it increasingly frustrating. (And eventually that backpack is going to get too heavy and we're going to not be able to run anymore and/or be physically harmed by it.)

And, for the record, while he's the face of it all - the blame doesn't fall squarely and solely on Obama. There's a whole congress of monkeys wielding bricks that they think are well-intentioned, but fail to realize are still bricks. The problem is that a collectivist ideology is trying to co-exist with a nation and people whose ideology is individualist. It doesn't work. The two can't co-exist. Each one is anathema to the other.

  19. @18 - Ya know, people compare government to parenting a lot, while ignoring that the purpose of parenting is to teach kids how to function as independent adults who live on their own, and make their own choices without supervision.

  26. Hey Mimi, ever hear of WWII? Where would you be if we hadn't stuck our nose in that? If we didn't have to save you people and those filthy communist Russians, we could have beaten Japan in no time and we wouldn't have had to nuke them, so guess what, Japan getting nuked is YOUR fault! HA

  30. Mimi- I for one don't need a leader. I can lead myself just fine without help or hindrance from my government. All I want my federal government to do is stop the threat of those who would do us harm, at our border. Period. Otherwise leave the states counties and cities to figure out the rest. If I don't like what what my city, county or state does I can move. Not so much when the federal government imposes it's will upon all of us.
