Maiko Loyola scores winning run vs Rome. |
Baseball won.
Rome scored 4 runs on 4 solo home runs, but the Catfish used singles, walks, stolen bases, and wild pitches to scratch out 5 runs -- the final run coming in the bottom of the 9th -- as the Catfish won 5-4 tonight.
Rome scored in the 2nd inning on a solo home run by 1B Frederick Freeman to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Catfish tied it in the bottom of the 4th. With 1 out, RF Reid Fronk walked and stole second. 1B Henry Wrigley walked, then both runners moved up on a wild pitch. LF Stephen Vogt drove in Fronk on a ground out to second, tying the game at 1-1.
In the 5th, the Catfish took the lead. SS Omar Luna singled, moved to second, third, and scored on three wild pitches. After DH Quinn Stewart drew a 2-out walk, he stole second and third, then scored on a single by 3B Greg Sexton, putting the Catfish up 3-1.
Rome tied it in the 7th. SS Michael Fisher and LF Cody Johnson hit back-to-back solo homers -- Johnson's a towering shot off the scoreboard -- chasing starter Alex Cobb.
In the 8th, Fronk was hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored on Vogt's single to center, giving the Catfish a 4-3 lead.
In the 9th, another solo home run by Johnson tied the game.
But the Catfish won it in the bottom of the 9th. CF Maiko Loyola singled with 1 out, and stole second. Former Rome player Chase Fontaine walked, then both runners moved up on a wild pitch. With 2 outs, Sexton singled over the head of Rome RF Cole Miles, plating Loyola and giving the Catfish the win.
Once again, Cobb pitched well enough to win. He wound up with his 4th straight no-decision, and 8th straight start without a win, despite pitching well enough to win all 8. He went 6-1/3, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits, striking out a pair. Jose Angel Mejias pitched 1-2/3, allowing 1 hit. Austin Hinkle suffered his 1st blown save in 7 opportunities, but picked up the win on Sexton's RBi single in the 9th.
The short series with Rome ends Sunday night, before the Catfish head to Rome for another pair of games.
The win also keeps the Catfish all alone in 1st place, sporting an 8-1 record.
Man, the Catfish have certainly turned it around here at the beginning of the second half.
ReplyDeleteThat ninth sounds like a nail biter.
