Karen (Pondering Penguin)

We're delighted to have Karen from Pondering Penguin joining up for today's interview...

The panel is ready with their questions....

Now, for the first question...

Have you ever considered employing your passion for politics in real terms like campaigning or running for local office?

Politics has been a lifelong passion with me, even majoring in Political Science in college. I do work on local campaigns if the candidate captures my interest. Perhaps one day I'll be a candidate myself as my time becomes more my own with a son almost ready to go off to college. I belong to a womans group incorporated into a Political Action Committee locally.

What's the best thing about blogging?

I love having the opportunity to put my thoughts and opinions into words. I use the blog as a tool to improve my writing skills. My goal of becoming a successful grant writer depends on good writing skills. A truly wonderful bonus is the people I meet through the comments section and reading the blogs of others. Also, my son is a big help to me when I need technical assistance!

What's the most Redneck / White trash thing you've ever done?

Hmmm... Does pulling over to the side of the road to pee count?

basil
What's in your purse?

The contents in my purse are: wallet, checkbook, pen, notepad, keys, paperback book, camera, cell phone, kleenex, mints, address book, small leather bag (souvenir from Bolivia thanks to husband) containing lipstick and feminine emergency items.

Sherlock
Who's your favorite movie star?

I'm fickle about movie stars. But a couple who have remained at the top of the list are Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton.

Which region produces the best coffee: Hawaii/Central America, Africa or Sumatra/Indonesia?

Definitely Hawaii/Central America. I visited a coffee farm in Kona, Hawaii and it was an awesome experience for a dedicated coffee drinker like me.

You seem to handle your husband's travels with a modicum of grace, which leads me to believe he's done it for quite a long time. Does it ever get less nerve wracking?

My husband has travelled for the duration of our relationship, which is nearing the 24th year, almost 23 married. I never felt the need to change his career path so that he would be home more. I look at it as the best of both worlds - it's great for him to be home but it's also nice to have some of my own time to do what I want to do. I was raised to be independent and that helps a lot. Also, I don't think about where he is going when it is a dangerous location. I practice selective denial.

What's the best concert you've ever been to?

I was just talking to my 16 year old son about a concert I went to in Atlanta as a senior in high school in Piedmont Park. The concert was an all day thing and the headliner was the Allman Brothers with Lynyrd Skynyrd. This is when they were regional bands before making it big on the national scene. Yeah, I'm old. I saw Sonny and Cher once in the Blue Room in New Orleans as a 12 year old. That was cool, too. I'm not one for big arena shows.

Sherlock
Who's the greatest character in all of literature?

Male: Atticus Fitch
Female: Scarlett O'Hara

What's the best coffee drink there is?

Starbuck's Peppermint Mocha during the holiday season.

What kind of things do you like to do just for YOU; in those rare but fabulous purely selfish "Me" times?

I love to have the luxury to just sit quietly and read for as long as I want to read. And watch chick movies. And eat popcorn. A nice glass of Pinot Grigio or a cold amber beer to go with the popcorn adds to the relaxation.

Recommend a book.

The only way I can recommend a book is to recommend the one I am currently reading. I read way too much to narrow the really good ones down. Besides, I read a lot of stuff that only nerds like me would enjoy! Currently I am reading "All the Way From Yoakum" by Marjorie Meyer Arsht. I went to her book signing recently and she is a really cool 93 year old woman. Most of my reading centers around history and politics.

yak
Which politician or public figure would you most like to see run over by a zamboni?

Oh wow. So many to choose from here. I suppose I'll pick a classic and say it would have to be Teddy Kennedy.

yak
Same question - same zamboni - what celebrity?

Again, so many choices. I'll go with Sean Penn after the latest incident involving the canoe in the flood waters of New Orleans.

basil
What sitcom could you star in and play yourself, not change any thing about yourself?

Excellent question. I'm kinda like "Reba" around here. If, God forbid, anything happened to my husband, I know I could take care of myself and our son. She's independent and hard headed like me. And, of course, there are those control issues...

Thanks again to Karen for taking the time to answer our questions. We really appreciate it and had a great time.

Next week, the interviews are with Allan of Politechnical and with Republican Jen.
