Who enlisted the Nigerians in the U.S. Army?

Got an email recently. You've got them before, too. The old Nigerian scam. Someone has a lot of money to move from one country to another and they want your help in making it happen.

If you haven't figured it out, it's a scam.

Well, it seems the latest version is where the scammer says he's a soldier, trying to move money out of Iraq:

Hello Pal,

I hope my email meets you well. I am in need of your assistance. My name is Sgt. Morgan Reeves Jr. I am a military attache with the Engineering unit here in Ba'qubah Iraq for the united state, we have about $25 Million dollars that we want to move out of the country.

My partners and I need a good partner someone we can trust to actualize this venture. The money is from oil proceeds and legal. But we are moving it through diplomatic means to your house directly or a safe and secured location of your choice using diplomatic courier services.

But can we trust you? Once the funds get to you, you take your 40% out and keep our own 60%. Your own part of this deal is to find a safe place where the funds can be sent to. Our own part is sending it to you.

If you are interested reply to Email: sgt.morganreeves@yahoo.com.cn
I will furnish you with more details.

Awaiting your urgent response.
Your Buddy.
Sgt. Morgan j.Reeves

I don't know what ticks me off more: some a**hole thinking I'm stupid enough to fall for the old Nigerian scam, or some a**hole pretending to be a soldier.

Okay, I do know which makes me mad: the pretending to be a soldier. I wore my country's uniform, and don't appreciate anyone trying to use it for any bad purpose.

No, I don't usually post about these kind of things. Ferdy, the Conservative Cat, is all over this kind of stuff. But it just ticked me off so much, I had to vent.

  1. Good call. This one would have moved me to publish, too. Pity we can't install some kind of mechanical anti-spam device that would deliver an electroshock back through the internet to the sender each time a reader marked the e-mail as "spam-of-shocking-quality." I'm sure the idea has Constitutional problems, but I can dream.

  2. Maybe he is just trying to subsidize his military career and continue to be a great soldier. According to the news, 99% of our military is on welfare because of Bush.

I would keep corresponding with him, he just wants a friend, or are you going to turn your back on our military?

  3. I'm no techy, but maybe a better spam filter might be in order? As soon as I read 'dear friend' or 'urgent assistance' I sort of know not to bother wasting valuable reading time.
    Best wishes

  4. I got one of those, too. Dateline did a program about people who steal idenities and traced the source to.....Nigeria! They used stolen credit cards to buy mostly electronics, got a sap in the US to accept the pkgs and mail them to Africa or otherr countries. A guy had spent thousands of dollars and thought he was going to marry this swimsuit model(who was not who was in touch with him)--even though he was married at the time! He ended up losing his house but he did keep his wife. I was shocked at the number of Americans who send money to Nigeria in these scams! I even heard Judge Judy screaming at people saying don't be stupid and send money to Nigeria! But this new tactic is really underhanded using soldiers!

  5. Any time 'the news' says 99% of anything is true, you can be assured it isn't. Idiot.

Blame Harry Reid's temper tantrum and pulling down the whole appropriations bill for the U.S. military not getting their raise approved.

Nigerians wouldn't know the truth if it smacked them in the face. My husband has worked there in his field of work and they are tragically ignorant and of very little character. Everyone is scamming everyone.

  6. Have some fun with them. Email them back, tell them that you have recently won the lottery, and want to donate a million to a good cause. Fine military personnell like themselves should recieve this landfall." Just give me your contact info and I will get a check out to you"

  7. [...] clues to wade trhough comments and will look at fewer linking sites, that’s for sure. I am told that Ferdy, a/k/a Conservative Cat, is ahead of the curve on this stuff generally and specifically. [...]

  8. I can't believe that you (Sgt. Morgan Reeves Jr.) would insult our country (America) the wat you are. We take our military seriously & you are making a mockery of it. Some of these men & women are truly trying to help our country. What about you ? You have no idea what you are doing to others by putting this shit on the net. You truely are a f@*kin idot. Get a life & not in the military.
