Catfish beat Hagerstown again

Stephen Vogt races across home plate after homering against Hagerstown.

The Columbus Catfish are ending the season on a roll.

They won their 12th game in 16 tries this evening, beating the Hagerstown Suns (Nationals), 3-0. It's their 3rd in the series with Hagerstown. A win Monday gives the Catfish a 4-game sweep.

The Catfish got on the board in the 1st inning. SS Shawn O'Malley singled, took second on a passed ball, and went to 3rd on a ground out. CF Reid Fronk brought him home on a ground out to second, putting the Catfish up 1-0.

A lead-off homer by LF Stephen Vogt, who had robbed Hagerstown CF Mark Gildea of a homer in the 5th inning, gave the Catfish a 2-0 lead.

C Mike McCormick doubled down the left field line with 1 out in the 7th. He went to third on a ground out, then scored on a double by 2B Omar Luna.

Quinn Stewart greeted at home plate after homering against Hagerstown.
The Catfish broke it open in the 8th.

Quinn Stewart blasted a 3-run homer over the Hampton Inn sign in left field, scoring Fronk and 3B Greg Sexton. It was the 20th straight game in which Fronk had reached base, tops for the Catfish this season.

Brian Flores pitched 6-1/3 inings, allowing 4 hits and striking out 4, and picking up his 8th win. Kevin Boggan pitched 2-2/3 innings of relief, allowing 2 9-inning hits. He earned his 5th save.

Vogt, Sexton, and McCormick each had 2 hits for the Catfish.

The win, along with Augusta's win tonight, keeps the Catfish in 2nd place, needed to pick up 4-1/2 games to earn a playoff spot.
