The Casablanca Quiz

My favorite movie is Casablanca. Great film. If you haven't seen it, you should. That is your assignment: watch Casablanca.

There will be a test. If you watch the movie, you'll be able to answer these questions:
  1. Why did Rick tell Capt. Renault he came to Casablanca?
  2. What did Rick tell Maj. Strasser when the latter asked his nationality?
  3. What color did Ilsa wear that day in Paris?
  4. Who wore grey?
  5. What about Ugarte did Rick object?
  6. Why was Capt. Renault unconcerned about the gun pointed at his heart?
  7. Who is Ferrari going to pay for the cigarettes?
  8. What were Capt. Renault's instructions following the killing of a character at the end of the film?
  9. What did Capt. Renault say he was shocked (shocked!) to discover happening at Rick's?
  10. What kind of man is Capt. Renault?
  11. What watch?
  12. How much did Ilsa offer Rick for his thoughts?
  13. If it's December 1941 in Casablanca, what time is it in New York?
  14. Where did Rick hide the letters of transit?
If you can answer these questions without re-watching the film, you are a true fan.

Update: The answers (with video!)

    Round up the usual suspects
    Gambling
    a true democrat?
    (watch???)no answer
    a franc
    no answer
    In Sams piano

    I figure I got 9-10 right?

  2. Elwin: You done pretty good:

    1. close enough, assuming a typo
    2. correct
    3. correct
    4. correct
    5. almost
    6. you did not answer
    7. correct
    8. correct
    9. correct
    10. nope, though, yes Rick called him that. However, that question was asked word-for-word in the movie. I'm looking for the answer given.
    11. nope, there was a direct response to that question in the movie.
    12. correct
    13. nope, there was a direct response to that question in the movie.
    14. correct

So, you got 8 exactly right (2,3,4,7,8,9,12,14) another that's close enough (1), and half-right on another (5). And you were technically correct with one answer (10), though if you listen for that exact question in the film, you get a much, much better answer.

Not bad. Not bad at all, from memory.

So, you're just like any other fan, only more so.

  4. Don: to be sure.

Which points out that I should update with a 15th question: Which character uttered the phrase, "Play it again, Sam?"

  5. I'll have a go at two of the questions Elwin didn't answer: number 6 'my least vulnerable spot' and number 11 'ten watch'.

Good quiz! How about one for Lion In Winter?

  7. Am I the only person that has a problem with this Casablanca? For so long I had heard how fantastic this movie was, and when I finally saw it, I was...well, I didn't like it. I couldn't believe that people think that is a great love story. I have no respect for Ilsa. She is a disgrace as a wife. And not because she moved forward after thinking her husband was dead, but because she was willing to leave him at the end. Marriage is supposed to be forever. Everything else in the movie is wonderful, and I love old b/w movies, but I just can't get past that one point.

  8. Kerry B:
Your points about Ilsa are valid. But to me, one of the strengths of Casablanca is that all of the characters are flawed (excepting, perhaps Laszlo), and, despite their wants and desires, do the right thing.

Rick was correct in that, if she didn't go with Laszlo, she'd regret it. So, yes, she was going to make a terrible mistake.

She was young and weak. But we've all been, to varying degrees.

  9. When she comes to see Rick alone Ilsa initially wants the Letters of Transit and tries to force them from him with a gun. It is only after they talk that she is so torn between Rick and Laszlo that she tells Rick he must do the thinking for both of them. He says he will and he does, concocting the scheme to send her off with Laszlo. She goes with Laszlo in the end making it, for me, a story of her temptation but ultimate fidelity.
