panel

First question...

RM
I would like to know if groovy vic ever won the lottery, would she share it with her blog buddies? I mean her closest blog buddies?

Groovyvic
It depends. Would you still be my blog bud after I gave you the dough?

basil
Now, we have a couple of journalism students from Finland that have sent in questions. Our first student...
finland06
Hi, I'm a journalist student from Finland. I'm studying in the capital of Finland, in Helia University of Business and Applied Sciences. We had an assignment from our English teacher to do an interview via email.

So I'm asking some questions related to the Danish cartoon which related Muhammed to a terrorist bomber. If you have kindly time to answer these I would be really appreciative.

What were your first thoughts about the cartoon?

Groovyvic
Christians have always been the butt of the joke around here and we haven't set anything on fire yet, that I know of. So my initial thoughts were: put on your big boy panties and deal with it. After 9/11 what do they expect? But I think there's much truth in jest...

finland06
It came out already in September 2005 and the representations didn't start until January 2006. Why do you think it took so long time to react?

Groovyvic
I know they tried to start this whole thing up when they first came out ... the imam in Europe wrote back to religious leaders in the Mid-East and they sent diplomats to European counties demanding that they curb their press. Maybe they gave it some time and figured that since that didn't work they'd get the protests going.

finland06
What should Denmark now do if they want to calm the situation down?

Groovyvic
Truth: Tell all of the Muslims who are flipping out about this to grow up and realize that they do not have any control over another sovereign nation;

Official Version: make some kind of reconciliatory offer.

finland06
What will be happening in the future?

Groovyvic
I don't really know, but I am sure that innocent / ignorant people on both sides of the issue will continue to be manipulated and used as pawns.

finland06
Is this cartoon reaction speaking behalf of a bigger issues? If so, what would they be?

Groovyvic
I think that the politically-correct crowd has for a long time pushed that if you are anything other than conservative and Christian that you should be embraced in the name of diversity so we can live in their version of Utopia. That is another issue, but I think that what these folks are missing one key point - not everyone out there (ie the Muslim extremists) wants to live in that Utopia.

basil
Now, the second student...
finland05
Hi! I am a 21-year-old journalism student from Finland (Scandinavia, Europe).

I'm interested in your opinion about the situation in Denmark where a newspaper published some drawn pictures about the prophet Mohammed. The Islamic countries have reacted pretty strongly to the pictures and they want the Jyllands-Posten's editor-in-chief to apologize them.

Groovyvic
I would say something to the affect that if you truly believe in freedom of the press you wouldn't bow to pressure from those who want to censor you ... but on the other hand that freedom should be (in my humble opinion) tempered by morals, ethics and the realization of the potential impact of that freedom.

finland05
In Jyllands-Posten they think they have done nothing wrong. For those who draw those "funny" pictures the situation pretty bad. They may have to hide from the possible terrorist attacks for the rest of their lives.

Groovyvic
They did the same thing with Salmon Rushde when he wrote an anti-Islam book ... I don't know if he is still on their hit list, or if they got him, but things will fade with time.

finland05
So, I would like to know what do you think about this situation :

How much the current situation in Denmark has been on the news in US?

Groovyvic
I don't pay too much attention to the news anymore, and not just because of the Liberal bias. I do, however, think that Islam isn't a religion anymore, it's politics

finland05
Have you discussed with anyone about it?

Groovyvic
Just my husband.

finland05
What is your opinion about the situation in Denmark right now?

Groovyvic
I am glad to see that the Euro-weenies are finally starting to wake up and seeing the potential threat of Islamic extremism.

finland05
Do you think the newspaper does the right thing by not apologizing? After all, in Denmark there is a wide freedom of the press, as there is in every democratic country.

Groovyvic
Well, you wouldn't see them apologize for running insulting cartoons of Jesus ... what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

finland05
Is Denmark a safe place to be right now? Do you think there is going to be a terrorist attack?

Groovyvic
They'll try, but I think that there is more of a likelihood that all of this stink over the cartoons will start a backlash among the Euros. Europe has been so passive and accommodating to Islamic extremists. I think that many of the folks who were looking to appease these extremists are starting to have flashbacks to the 1930's and they didn't like what they remembered.

finland05
What do you think should be done to prevent a misunderstanding like this from happening in the future?

Groovyvic
I'm not sure that much can be done. I doubt that Muslim extremists will suddenly try to be more understanding of cultures other than their own, so you can either appease them and change our way of life to accommodate them or not.

basil
Who's the smartest woman that you've ever met?

Groovyvic
I'm going to say female bloggers. I've read some really impressive stuff, which makes me want to be a better blogger/writer. I've got a long way to go.

bachman
Who's the greatest male author?

Groovyvic
That kind of thing is subjective. What I like may be something you hate, so I'm not going to pick one author.

bachman
Female author?

Groovyvic
Me! Have you read my blog??? Oh, yeah...well...

Right now I'm loving Diana Gabaldon and her Outlander series, and I've been introduced to Francine Rivers, who writes Christian fiction.

You know, I read a lot, and I was an English major, but I tend to stay shy away from the heavy stuff these days.

KR
In a fight between Alec Guiness and Ewan McGregor, who would have the most impressive light saber?

Groovyvic
I don't know, I've never seen Alec Guiness naked. McGregor's is....whoa!

Oh, wait! Did you mean actual lightsabers???

Sherlock
What's your favorite movie of all time?

Groovyvic
I love the movies that were made in the 30's and 40's, and my favorite is The Women with Joan Crawford, Norma Shearer and Paulette Goddard. The movie is all women, and it is still representative of women and their behavior to this day. I love it!

DonW
Are tractors sexy?

Groovyvic
Yes! The bigger, the better!

Garfield
Who would be the best person to be the next President of the United States?

Groovyvic
A Conservative Republican who isn't afraid to secure our borders and take a hard line stance on terrorism, here and abroad. And he must be military friendly, especially towards the Guard and Reserves.

basil
Is tomorrow just another day?

Groovyvic
Pretty much. But I'll never be hungry again!

Groovyvic, we thank you for agreeing to the interview. We had a blast. Okay, I had a blast. And I hope everyone else did, too. Thank you.

Next week, we have interviews with Dadmanly and with Fuzzybear Lioness of Fuzzilicious Thinking.
