Catfish Beat Savannah, Close in on Rome, Augusta

With seven games left in the first half, the Columbus Catfish need to win out to have a chance to capture first place. They began that quest tonight with a 6-5 win over the Savannah Sand Gnats tonight.

Sergio Pedroza hit his league-leading 15th home run of the season, added a double and an RBI single to lead the attack. David Sutherland was 3-for-4 with a run scored to contribute to the attack.

The Catfish and the Sand Gnats were tied at three in the seventh inning when Drew Locke scored on a SAL All-Star 3B Russ Mitchell sacrifice and a throwing error by losing pitcher Don Levinski.

SAL All-Star pitcher Cory Wade pitched 7 innings to pick up his 4th win of the season.

With the win, the Catfish are now 5-½ games out with six games left. Division-leading Rome and second-place Augusta were rained out tonight. Each has seven games left in the first half.

The four-game series in Savannah continues Tuesday night, before the Catfish travel to Rome to close out the first half.

  1. i am a cal state fullerton alumni, so my obvious interest is sergio pedroza. he seems to be fairly productive with the bat in terms of rbi, doubles, homers, and patience with walks. his strike outs seem a bit high, but are there rumours of him getting promoted to vero beach this summer? and how did he not make the SAL all-stars?

  2. From what I undertand, the Catfish did nominate Sergio for an all-star position, but the league didn't pick him. Nominations are by position, so some of that depends on who all is nominated for that position.

I agree ... and the Catfish staff that I spoke with agree ... that the SAL's omitting him was a tremendous oversight.

His omission had nothing to do with immediate plans to promote him. That doesn't mean he's about to be promoted or is not about to be promoted. My personal opinion is that he will be promoted. And soon. But that depends on how those in his position are doing at Vero Beach. And at Jacksonville. And at Las Vegas. And in Los Angeles.
