[...] I vividly recall being told during the Cold War that I was “against peace” when I sneered at “peace” protestors and the like, who thought increasing applications of supine self-flagelation were the surest road to “peace”. That wasn’t a “peace I could accept, and, for good measure, my “war” party proved the more correct path to peace, empirically speaking and all. Kind of like when Ike (the president of sainted memory appearing in posts recently here and here, the latter being a case where even a bitter Iraq war opponent recognizes some good in Ike) threatened to nuke Beijing at the end of the Korean conflict. Determination on our part makes the bad guys more prone to taking us seriously (Google Operation Linebacker for another example of the best way to win such wars and check out the ISG and Chamberlain for an example of how not to do so along these lines).
