Catfish Sweep Savannah In Doubleheader

The Columbus Catfish got back on the winning track Saturday, taking both games of a doubleheader from the Savannah Sand Gnats (Nationals), 2-1 and 2-0.

Although held to just four hits in game one, the Catfish made the most of it with two hits and a walk in the 4th inning. The big blast was 1B Jason Mooneyham's two-out, two-run double that plated SS Ivan De Jesus, who had singled, and 3B Russell Mitchell, who had walked.

In game two, RF Sergio Pedroza accounted for the scoring with a two-out, two-run triple in the third inning, driving in CF Bridger Hunt, who had singled and 2B Travis Denker, who had reached on a fielder's choice. The 2 RBIs bring Pedroza's league-leading total to 66.

Catfish pitching held up, despite allowing 8 Sand Gnat hits in the first game. A double-play, a pick-off, and a caught-stealing, plus timely defense enabled the Catfish to strand five Savannah players and limit the Sang Gnats to one run. Cory Wade scattered 7 hits in 5 innings work to pick up the win. Jonathan Meloan pitched 2 innings of one-hit ball to earn his first save.

In game two, Arismendy Castillo allowed just 3 hits in 5 inning to tally his 5th win. Matthew Gomez de Segura allowed a 7th inning walk and a single, but C Juan Apodaca threw out Francisco Plasencia trying to steal second, then Gomez de Segura struck out the last two Sand Gnats to get his 2nd save.

The wins bring the Catfish to .500 for the second half, with a 5-5 record, 2 games out of first place. The series continues in Savannah Sunday with an afternoon game, before concluding Monday night.
