Baseball Trip / Open TrackBacks 2007-04-14

The Wife and I are taking our first weekend trip of the baseball season ... and catching our first Biscuits game of the year.

We had the chance last year to attend some Biscuits games ... mostly while rooting for the other team. You see, our local team, the Columbus Catfish, a Class-A team in the South Atlantic League, were a Dodgers affiliate.

Now, I'm a Braves fan, not a Dodgers fan. But since we got to know some of the players on the Catfish, we followed them after they were promoted. Up the line from the Catfish, at Double-A, were the Jacksonville Suns, in the Southern League. And they played the Montgomery Biscuits, since they are both in the same division in the Southern League.

So, we went over to Montgomery to cheer on the Suns. And had a good time, win or lose. Had Jacksonville been closer, we'd have gone to more games. As it was, we only got the chance to see them in Montgomery, or if they were playing near somewhere we were going to be anyway. That's how we managed to see the Suns in Knoxville and Huntsville in the last couple of year.

During the off-season, the Catfish changed affiliations. Now, they're a Devil Rays affiliate. Which means that upline from the Catfish, at Double-A, is .... wait for it ... the Montgomery Biscuits.

So, it's a whole new bunch of faces for the Catfish this year. Of course, with promotions, only 3 pitchers and 2 position players from last year are with this year's Dodgers Class-A affiliate (now, the Great Lakes Loons). So, it'd have been almost a clean slate anyway.

Now, here's the other thing. In the last couple of years, the Dodgers and Devil Rays have made trades involving many minor league players. Which means that some of the players in the Devil Rays organization are former Catfish. Like last night's winning pitcher for the Biscuits, Brett Wayne. He was an outfielder for the South Georgia Waves/Columbus Catfish. Although my research lists him as an infielder, I remember him playing the outfield; my memory could be wrong.

Anyway, the point is, the Biscuits are not all strangers to us. Some former Catfish are at the Devil Rays High-A affiliate in Vero Beach (Dodgers and Devil Rays swapped High-A affiliates, too). So, we expect to see more former Catfish playing at Montgomery this season, and next.

This weekend, we're in Chattanooga. Or will be later this morning. And we'll be there to watch the Chattanooga Lookouts and the Montgomery Biscuits play ball.

If only the weather holds out.
