After shocking the Southern League in 2006 by winning the league championship, the Montgomery Biscuits began defense of their crown by shutting out the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx (Mariners), 4-0.
LHP Chris Seddon threw 7 innings of one-hit ball, allowing just three baserunners, to pick up the win. He hit a batter in the first, allowed a leadoff single in the third, and walked a batter in the fifth. Seddon notched 5 strikeouts en route to his first win this season.
RHP Evan Meek came on in relief in the 7th and pitched two innings, scattering two hits. RHP Dale Thayer allowed a single in the ninth and struck out two to pick up the save.
The Biscuits got on the board in the 3rd inning when LF Jason Pridie singled, went to second when CF Fernando Perez walked, and to third on a 2B Josh Asanovich sacrifice bunt. SS Reid Brignac grounded out to first, scoring Pridie.
The Biscuits added two more in the 6th. Brignac singled, 3B Evan Longoria doubled, scoring Brignac. After two outs, Patrick Breen pinch hit, driving in Longoria on a single to left.
A final run in the 8th closed the scoring. Longoria singled, moved to second when 1B Chris Nowak walked, then scored on RF Shaun Cumberland's single to center field.
The 5-game series continues Friday night in Montgomery.
