After being rained out Sunday, the Columbus Catfish and the Asheville Tourists (Rockies) scheduled two Monday. And the first game went to the Catfish, 6-2.
After avoiding a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the 1st, the Catfish put a run on the board in the top of the 2nd. C Nevin Ashley doubled, then moved to third on a wild pitch. After an out and a walk, Ashley scored when 1B Matt Fields singled to right, making it 1-0 in favor of the Catfish.
In the 4th, with one out, RF Quinn Stewart homered to center field. Fields then singled, moved to third on 2B Brett Grandstrand's double. SS Jairo De La Rosa doubled, scoring both Fields and Grandstrand. De La Rosa moved to third on a pop fly, and scored when LF John Matulia singled. The inning ended, though, when Matulia was thrown out at second, trying to stretch his single into a double.
Asheville narrowed it to 5-1 on an RBI single by RF Victor Ferrante. The Catfish missed an opportunity to pad the score in the 5th, when they stranded runners on second and third. But they did add a run in the 7th. An Asheville error on the end of a potential double play put Catfish 3B Cesar Suarez on second. He moved to third on Ashley ground out to, second base. Another Asheville error allowed Suarez to score on what would have been an inning-ending grounder to second base, putting the Catfish up 6-1.
An Asheville double and single in the bottom of the 7th made it 6-2. But Catfish reliever Chris Kelly got Asheville CF Anthony Jackson to ground out to short to end the game.
The win puts the Catfish in 3rd place, a game behind second place Kannapolis. Another game between the Catfish and Asheville is scheduled later this afternoon.
