Catfish Bounce Back, Blank Augusta

Columbus Catfish logoFor the second night in a row, the Columbus Catfish didn't allow the Augusta Greenjackets (Giants) to score an earned run. Unlike the previous night, they didn't allow them to score an unearned run, either.

Powered by home runs from CF Desmond Jennings and DH Brett Grandstrand, the Catfish blanked the division leaders, 6-0.

The Catfish got on the board in the first inning, when Jennings led the home half with a solo shot over the left field wall.

In the 4th inning, Grandstrand added 4 more runs with a grand slam. LF John Matulia led the inning with a single to left. With 1 out, C Nevin Ashley reached on an error when Augusta P Robert Grace mishandled a bunt. RF Maiko Loyola loaded the bases when he drew a walk. That led to Grandstrand's grand slam.

The Catfish pushed one more run across in the 8th inning. With 2 out, 3B Cesar Suarez and Ashley both singled. After Craig Albernaz replaced Ashley, Loyola singled to right, scoring Suarez.

Starter Lewis Rollins went 6 innings, allowing 2 hits, walking 1, and striking out 7 in picking up his 1st win. Chris Kelly worked 2 innings of relief, striking out 1. Ryan Reid worked the 9th inning, shutting down Augusta in three at-bats, allowing a meaningless single, and getting 1B Brett Pill to ground into a 6-3 double play.

The series concludes Friday night, with the Catfish assured no worse than a split with the Greenjackets.
