After dropping the first two games in a series with the Greenville Drive (Red Sox), the Columbus Catfish came back and took the third, winning 5-2 Wednesday night.
3B Cesar Suarez singled in LF and leadoff batter Desmond Jennings in the top of the 1st inning to give the Catfish an early 1-0 lead.
The Catfish added two unearned runs in the 6th. DH Ryan Royster walked to lead the inning, then RF Maiko Loyola reached on an error. 1B Matthew Fields singled, scoring Royster, and Loyola advanced to on an error by Greenville CF Michael Hall. Loyola scored the second unearned run of the inning on 2B Joey Callender's ground ball double play.
In the 7th, C Nevin Ashley tripled to right, scoring LF John Matulia and Suarez, both whom had singled with one out.
Greenville scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the 7th, on two singles and two Catfish errors. Catfish reliever Ryan Owen settled down and got the final two outs of the inning, set Greenville down in order in the 8th, and recorded the first out of the 9th inning before giving way to Brian Baker, who finished off Greenville.
Catfish starter Woods Fines, who had a 5-inning, no-hit performance wasted on Friday, went another 5 innings tonight, scattering 5 hits, striking out 4, and walking 3, to earn the win.
At the plate, Matulia and Ashley were both 3-for-5 to lead the Catfish batters. Suarez and Fields each had 2 hits.
The final game of the series is Thursday night. Afterwards, the Catfish travel to Asheville to take on the Tourists (Rockies).
