Weekends Aren't Made For This

I don't know how many computers the average person owns. I probably have slightly more than normal.

My primary computer, for blogging, Website work, Wide Awakes Radio, and computer diagnostic and repair is my Gateway laptop. It's not a fancy machine, but it certainly does the job. It runs Windows XP Professional.

The Wife has her Dell desktop. She does her stuff on it. EBay, email, Web surfing, online banking, family photography, etc, with it. It runs Windows XP Home.

I have a home-built PC that I use for occasional Web surfing, but primarly as a Linux test box. It runs SuSE Linux 9.1.

There are two Compaq servers. I got them second- (or third- ... or fourth-) hand. One runs Windows Server 2000 and the other runs Windows Server 2003. Both are currently off-line, as I'm in the midst of a server realignment project. Since I'm not currently doing any hosting from home, I'm in no hurry to finish the project. It's for personal testing only. Just trying something different.

There is even a Tandy 1000 (A) that runs MS-DOS 6 (actually, MS-DOS 2, 3.2, 5.0, 6.0, 6.2, 6.22). It worked the last time I turned it on.

And other PCs that don't work. I use them for parts to repair others as necessary.

Plus, I've got another family PC project in mind I've been working on.

So, you'd think that there'd be no problem with having a computer to do what I need.

Well, you'd be wrong.

Right now, I'm composing this post on the Linux machine. Why? Well, the Little Princess is having trouble with her Dell laptop. So, she's bringing it to me Sunday. She's visiting her mother this weekend, and we'll meet in Macon or somewhere tomorrow evening, I'll take her Dell and give her my Gateway. That way, she'll still have a working computer and I'll be able to get hers fixed. So, the laptop is in the midst of a backup. Which puts me on the Linux machine.

The problem is, I'm trying to set the laptop up so she can use it for school. I have an extra laptop harddrive that I'll be putting in there today, taking out my current. Then I'll have everything installed that she needs.

Trouble is, I can't find my Office 2003 CD. I have the box it came in. Just can't find the CD. It's the educational version. (Yes, we qualify for it a couple of ways, so I'm not cheating or anything!) The license is for 3 PCs. So, I'm trying to locate it to install on the new hard drive.

I'm also backing everything up, just in case things go wrong. That takes a while.

So, right now, I'm missing Office 2003. And I don't know how long it'll be before her Dell laptop is fixed, which means I might not be able to do the WideAwakesRadio show I do on Sundays. Since only the laptop has the software to run the show.

Plus, I have to put up a new fence today. The goats are getting out.

And I thought weekends were for relaxing.

  1. You sound like my husband! We currently have four computers -- three laptops and a desktop, which is our server for the network.

And the really fun thing is that Husband is the "computer guru" at work; we even get calls on weekends!

  2. If finding the CD fails, you may want to consider downloading the new Office 2007 Beta. If I recall the deal correctly, the beta will be good until mid or late 2007. I've been using the suite for a month or so now, and am very pleased with it.

I had the same issue with my Macromedia MX, and ended up just copying the files across my network, which worked, I had to enter the serial code the first time I ran the programs but it lacked the normal install procedures. Never the less, it did give me the programs despite my absent mindedness in losing the CD.
