Baseball Musings is a kid. Goes back to 1974
ReplyDeleteUm, how about 1968. Gibson. 22-9 with a 1.12 ERA
1.12
One ER in every 8 IP
and he lost 9 games -- on an NL pennant winner?
Babseball Analysis looked at the games http://baseballanalysts.com/archives/2005/06/gibson_was_grea_1.php
He had a 2.14 ERA and went 0-9 in those games, which included two 1-0 games, including a 10-inning game. (Gibby went all the way in that game)
Last night had a few shutouts but nowhere near as many as pre-1969 (when the mound was lowered)
I'm sometimes guilty of not paying attention to anything that happened before my lifetime. However, I must say, that I remember Bob Gibson's low ERA and the lowering of the mound.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see the mound raised. There's no excuse for all the home runs that have been hit lately. If Bonds, et al, are going to use steroids, I say let the pitchers use dirt -- five more inches to the mound, like it used to be.
I'm worried that we won't wait until 3001 for blurnsball to take over.
