Catfish Secure Winning Season

For the first time since the team moved to Columbus in 2003, the Columbus Catfish are going to have a winning record over the entire season. They guaranteed that with tonight's 2-0 win over the Charleston Riverdogs in South Carolina.

In 2003, the South Georgia Waves moved from Albany to Columbus, and finished with a record of 64-72. In 2004, when they changed their name to the Columbus Catfish, the team finished with a previous best 69-69 record. Last year, they reached a low posting a 57-79 record. This year, though, they'll have a winning record.

In the first half of the season, they went 37-33. With tonight's win, they're now at 34-33 in the second half, and 71-66 overall. The worst they could do is 71-69 for the 140-game season, two games over .500 ... and 4th place overall.

Tonight's win was engineered by P James McDonald who pitched a 3-hit complete game shutout. It was his 2nd complete game, although the first was August 20th's 5-inning, rain-shortened win over Rome. It's the Catfish' 2nd 9-inning shutout of the season. Cory Wade, now with the Vero Beach Dodgers, shut out Savannah 3-0 on June 7.

Offensively tonight, 2B Travis Denker was 3-for-4 with a double. 3B Eduardo Perez scored both Catfish runs. In the 2nd inning, 1B David Sutherland doubled, scoring Perez, who had walked. In the 7th, SS Juan Rivera doubled in Perez, who had singled to lead off the inning.

The win was only McDonald's 5th vs. 10 losses. However, he has the best ERA of the regular starters. Only Joe Jones, who's appeared in 8 games, 6 as a starter, has a lower ERA of the current roster. Lack of run support has contributed to McDonald's losing record.

The Catfish have 3 more games in Charleston before the season concludes.

  2. Actually, sitting behind home plate, I didn't get many pictures. I posted what I have, unless it just didn't come out. I'm not a good photographer, you see. But I will burn what I have from this season onto a CD and get it to you. I'll send it to the Catfish office, unless you want to contact me directly.

However ... there were some at the game that took lots of photos. I really only see them at the games, but I'll make contact with them and pass along your request.

Thanks for helping make the past 5 months loads of fun. And I hope your injury heals up just fine.

  3. Jason-my wife is the one who took all the photos. She gave most of the guys a cd to take home. Email her at slidin2astop2@bellsouth.net and she'll be happy to put them on a cd and mail to you. Probably 50 plus photos I am sure. Thanks for this season. Good luck with the injury.
