Champions

Despite my constant blogging about the Columbus Catfish, I have been extremely negligent about mentioning some other baseball players in the area.

This week, the Columbus High School baseball team won the Georgia class AAA championship over another school from Columbus, Shaw High School. That speaks a lot for the quality of high school baseball in the city. It's the second year in a row that Columbus High won the title, and the ninth time overall.

However, they aren't the only state champions in the area. A few days ago, Russell County High School won the Alabama class 5A championship. Russell County is the county immediately west of Columbus, Georgia.

And another word about Russell County High's baseball team. They ended the season ranked number one in the nation by USA Today and Baseball America. And many of the players you might have seen before. You see, some of the players from the 1999 Little League United States Championship team played on the Russell County team. So, you can see, they've been playing good baseball for a while.

Two state champions less than 20 miles apart. The folks in the Columbus/Phenix City/Seale area should be proud.

  1. Very Impressive.

It's amazing how championships seem to be grouped together this year.

Three of the area high schools here won the championships in 1-A, 2-A and 4-A baseball. The schools are all within a thirty minute drive from each other.

To say the level of competition in babe ruth and little league in our areas is impressive would be an understatement.
