Columbus offense scatters six hits

The Columbus (11-14) road trip started on a tough note Tuesday with a 7-0 loss in Augusta (12-11). RHP Ryan Shaver (1-2) shut down the 'Fish for seven innings to earn the win. He gave up just four hits and one walk.

With one out in the first inning RF Sergio Pedroza singled to left field. He moved to second base on a passed ball and then to third base on a wild pitch. Shaver struck out 1B Russ Mitchell and forced LF Drew Locke to foul out to first base, leaving Pedroza stranded at third. It was the last time Columbus would have a runner in scoring position against Shaver.

The Asheville offense was led by Mooney. He went 3-for-4 with a triple, home run, three RBI and two runs. Mooney also stole his sixth base of the season.

Columbus started LHP Marlon Arias (3-2), who gave up five runs in six innings and took the loss. He struck out seven Asheville hitters.

Wednesday at 7:05pm the four-game series will continue with a matchup of LHP Brent Leach (1-1, 3.86) and RHP Ronnie Ray (1-0, 1.89). Leach was part of history in his last outing. He struck out 14 against Asheville en route to a Columbus team record 23 strikeouts in the 13 inning marathon.
