Catfish Win Late

Columbus Comes Back on Savannah 9-8
Apodaca unloads bases with game-winning double

Columbus, GA ... Saturday at Golden Park in Columbus the Catfish (18-17) and Sand Gnats (13-22) needed all of three hours and fifteen minutes for a 9-8 decision in favor of the home team. With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning C Juan Apodaca slammed a 2-2 pitch to right field scoring all three baserunners for the win.

The Catfish took an early lead with four runs in the second inning. Apodaca's first double of the night scored two runs. CF Lucas May later drove in two runs of his own with a double.

Savannah jumped back with three runs in the top of the third inning. With the bases loaded IF Ofilio Castro singled to left field. On the play the ball got by LF Drew Locke, an error which allowed all three runners to score.

The Sand Gnats took a 5-4 lead in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by 1B Carlos Torres, his first dinger of the season. They added to the lead in the eighth inning when C Erick San Pedro drove in a run with a single and RF Francisco Plasencia added two more with a double. Savannah had an 8-4 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth.

Columbus scratched out two runs in the eighth inning on RBI singles from DH David Sutherland and SS Ivan DeJesus. Drama unfolded in the ninth amongst lightning and threats of rain. RF Sergio Pedroza struck out swinging, but reached first base on a wild pitch. 3B Russ Mitchell reached on an error by 2B Alex Nunez. 1B Jason Mooneyham laid down a sacrifice bunt to put both runners in scoring position. Locke walked to load the bases, but was followed by a Sutherland strikeout for the second out. Apodaca then saved the day by driving a double over Plasencia's head in right field, letting Locke race home from first base for the Catfish win.

RHP James McDonald started for Columbus, allowing five runs, three earned on three hits and four walks while striking out nine. LHP Miguel Sanfler (1-4) earned the win with a scoreless top of the ninth. RHP Dan Foli (0-1) suffered the loss.

The final game of the four-game series will take place Sunday at 2:00pm at Golden Park. LHP Marlon Arias (3-2, 5.12) will face RHP Craig Stammen (0-6, 4.37).
