Housekeeping II

Three Columns Or Two?

First, not sure if you noticed, but we've gone from a 3-column format to a 2-column format. Personally, I like the 3-column look better, but I ran into some issues. Lots of the stuff in the side columns include scripts that run from other servers. And, if the server is down or running slow, then it takes longer for stuff to display here. And you didn't see the actual posts (old center column) until the left column finished loading. So, long-loading left column meant delay in main column content. That's bad.

I did play around with shifting all the scripts that loaded from other servers to the right column. Which made me want to move the related ones, too. Anyway, I ended up with a short left column and a long right column. So I said, "I might as well have just one side-column." So, I did.

The bottom line is that the main column should load sooner, and appear to load faster. Maybe that will be a good thing.

Got Spam?

Yeah, we had 138 overnight. The offending IP address has been banned, so if it's yours, and you want to comment, drop me a line. We need to talk.

Typepad (who hosts this site) had been quite cooperative in running this down.

Another Carnival?

Do we really need one? Someone has suggested a Carnival of Search Engine Silliness. I don't know. I've been watching my logs and posting some odd stuff that people use. And I've seen others do similar stuff. Even others have recurring features making fun of the Search Engine Hell they encounter.

My plan is to do a round-up of Search Engine related posts. If you care to play along, and if you've done a post anytime in the past, e-mail me

with the information:Anyway, if it catches on, we may do this on a regular basis. And, if others want to play, maybe we can make something big out of this. But we're getting ahead of ourselves. Let's see how stuff goes today, first.

Hope you're hungry. We're preparing brunch now.

I didn't like the two columns when I first saw them. I visited on IE, and there was a scroll bar at the bottom, and I really hate those things. However, when I came here on Firefox, I can see the entire screen without the horizontal scrollbar, so now I like the two columns. I'll continue to visit on Firefox.
