A True Fan

I had a little wager going with someone who runs one of my favorite sites. Diane of respublica had posted a comment the other day on her blog talking about the upcoming game between her favorite team, the
ClevelandLos AngelesSt. Louis Rams and mine, the Atlanta Falcons. And, being the jerk I am, I posted a comment where I taunted her. And then I taunted her again on her site. Then on this site. She had enough and finally accepted my wager, if only to get me to shut the hell up. But she believes in her team. A true fan.

Of course, I consider myself a fan, too. It's not like I jumped on the Miami Dolphins bandwagon in the early 1970s. And it's not like I was disappointed after they lost Super Bowl VI to Dallas 24-3. And it's not like I was a complete ass during the fall of 1972 when the Dolphins went undefeated. And it's not like all the guys at the high school would wish I'd just give it a rest as the Dolphins went on to win the Super Bowl against Washington 14-7 to finish a perfect 17-0. And it's not like folks laughed when the Dolphins lost two games the next year (darn you Baltimore and Oakland!). And it's not like they were totally sick of me when the Dolphins made it back to the Super Bowl, beating Minnesota 24-7, with Larry Csonka setting a new Super Bowl record for yards gained. No, it's not like that at all.

And it's not like I jumped for joy in the 1980s when the USFL added the Jacksonville Bulls. And it's not like I ever went to any games in the Gator Bowl to watch them, including one featuring three Heisman Trophy winners (Doug Flutie, Herschel Walker, Mike Rozier). And it's not like I was really upset when the league folded. No, it's not like that at all.

And it not like I jumped for joy again in the 1990s when the NFL added the Jacksonville Jaguars. And it's not like I have any Jaguars clothing hanging in the closet. Or a Jaguars blanket in the living room that we used when it gets just a little chilly while watching TV. No, it's not like that at all.

No, I'm a Falcons fan. And have been for years. Ever since they franchise began in 1958. And I remember the old-time great Falcons, like Timmy Nobles. And that great quarterback of the past, Steve Berkinski. And, uh, others. And when the Falcons won the Super Bowl against Detroit, it was great. Yeah, I'm a Falcons fan.

And last night, when the Falcons and the Rams played, it's not like I fell asleep in the third quarter. No, there's no way I'd ever miss any of that action. No way I'd have to get up this morning and check the Internet to see how things finally turned out. No, none of that would ever happen because I'm a Falcons fan.

And I never had any doubt at all about the outcome of last night's game. Why, if I had any doubts at all, I would have done something like asked the wife three times if the card in the camera was cleared and ready to take photos. Or discussed possible poses with the goat. Or discuss whether to use Wendy (female) or Tinkerbell (male -- don't ask) or both. Or anything like that at all. No, I'm a Falcons fan through and through.

Never have any doubt about my unwavering support and life-long passion for the
DolphinsBullsJaguarsFalcons.

  9. Tags go on your car.

And I can edit comments. That's because it's my blog.

  14. Tag: Yes, but what are you compensating for?

E-mail: It's the good kind. You really want to hear the answer? Because I will tell you. And you'll have to listen to it all. Maybe I ought to write a column about it.

Oh, goody, goody! I gave you an idea for a column! My boss said you are indeed funnier than Dave Barry...in a Garrison Keillor sort of way. Maybe you could do public radio?
