Baseball Blogging: Another One-Run Game

Wednesday night, the Catfish played their 10th 1-run game of the season. That's out of 27 games. That's a heckuva lot of 1-run games. And they were 2-7 in those games. In Savannah, they lost 4 of 5 games, all losses by one run. And Wednesday night, the Catfish played the top team in the division, the Augusta GreenJackets (Giants). But Columbus came out on top this time, 1-0.

It was a hard-fought game, with some heads-up baserunning being the difference. Scoreless in the fourth inning, with Catfish on first and third and two out, the pitcher attempted to pick David Nicholson off at first, but he was stealing second. He was caught, but forced a rundown. While the GreenJackets were focusing on getting that third out. Dan Batz, who was on third, saw the opportunity and took off towards home, scoring before the tag on Nicholson happened. That was the only run of the game.

The guys were happy with the win, after having had such terrible luck in close games. And they should be. You see, if they had won those 1-run games, they'd be tied for the division lead. And if they had held the lead in the games they lost in extra innings or in the 9th inning, they'd be all alone in first place. They've been close in most of the games they've lost, and they've been frustrated with those losses.

But tonight, they played winning baseball and hung on to the lead. And they did it against the top team in the division. They should be proud. And the got the chance to do it again Thursday. I'll be there.
