Catfish Clobbered

If the 6-run 1st inning wasn't bad enough, the 10-run 4th inning did in the Columbus Catfish tonight in Charleston, WV, as they fell to the West Virginia Power, 16-6.

Catfish starter Mario Alvarez gave up 9 hits in the first inning, 7 singles and 2 doubles, as the Catfish found themselves in a 6-0 hole.

The Catfish got two runs back in the second when 3B Russ Mitchell hit his team-leading 14th home run over the left field wall. 1B David Sutherland walked and moved to third on LF Lucas May's double to center field. With one out, CF Bridger Hunt grounded to short, scoring Sutherland.

West Virginia put it out of reach in the 4th with a 10-run outburst, chasing Alvarez. Reliever David Pfeiffer didn't have any better luck, allowing 2 doubles, a single, walking 4 batters (including 2 with the bases loaded), and a bases-loaded triple.

Down 16-2, notched a run in the 8th when 2B Travis Denker led off with a solo homer.

In the 9th, RF Chris Jensen was hit by a pitch. Bridger Hunt walked. SS Juan Rivera singled to load the bases. Jason Mooneyham walked, scoring Jensen. Travis Denker singled, scoring Hunt. With one out, Russ Mitchell singled, scoring Rivera. David Sutherland grounded into a double play, ending the nightmare.

Catfish relievers Joe Jones, Dave Preziosi, and Joey Norrito combined to pitch the final 4 perfect innings, but the damage was done.

Offensively, Mitchell was 3-for-5 with a homer and 2 RBIs. Denker was 2-for-3, also with a homer and 2 RBIs.

It was the third time this season the Catfish have allowed 16 runs in a game. They lost to Greenville 16-3 on April 7, and to Asheville 16-9 on July 20.

The Catfish look to break the slump tomorrow night.
